Antarctic Team: First Day in Punta Arenas

This morning we woke up early and headed straight to the warehouse where we were told to gather our extreme weather gear. Each participant on the cruise is issued a bag that contains cold weather gear such as thermal clothing, waterproof jacket and overalls, steel-toed boots, hats, socks, gloves etc. We had a great time trying everything on and it was comforting to know that we would be well prepared for the cold ahead of us! Unfortunately, the winds last night were too strong for our ropes to be delivered so we will have to wait until tomorrow to start stringing together our crab pots. Since we couldn’t get started today, we took the opportunity to rent a car to see the penguin colony at Seno Otway. It was a chilly walk, but we got some great pictures of Magellanic Penguins! Once we brought the car back we headed out in search of food and, as luck would have it, we bumped into some of the technicians that will be on the R/V Palmer with us.
