We have deployed from Punta
Arenas! We were scheduled to leave the previous evening but strong winds had
prevented the crew from loading all the cargo. At 8:30 pm (which would be about
6:30 pm Eastern time), we waved at the pier just before the sun started to set.
We all breathed a sigh of relief, happy that we were headed to Marguerite Bay
and all our crab-pot preparations we completed. It has been quite a day! We
have five separate lines of rope that are 2550 m long, each with 10 crab pots
attached. Needless to say, we had a large amount of rope to move around on the
deck. The rope arrived in spools so our task today was to pull 2000 meters of
rope off the spools and lay them in a large wooden box. The trick was to make
sure that we laid the rope back and forth in such a way that it would easily
slide out of the box when we are deploying the traps. We certainly got a
workout today, but the entire team was enthusiastic and our spirits were high.
Now that all the ropes are spliced, the pots are stacked, and both are stored
in large container on the back of the ship, we are rewarding ourselves with our
nice warm beds.
