Hello from sunny Florida!
I'm happy to say that our whole team made it home safely and we are now all back at our respective universities. It was difficult to say goodbye to Chile, but it is wonderful to be home with friends and families for the holidays. I promised you all a video of penguins so below is a short video of chinstraps porpoising through the water:
I apologize that the last entry was very rushed and abrupt. We were having some difficulties finding a manageable path through the ice to get to Rothera. Once we found a path, things moved rather quickly and we were rushing around trying to finish last minute preparations. Rothera Station is nestled right in the middle of some of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Tall snow peaked mountains towered all around us while on the shoreline, seals and penguins lazily watched us as we pulled up to the dock. The residents of Rothera greeted us with open arms, cheerfully showing us around the station and encouraging us to join them for lunch. Our visit to Rothera was quite brief, however, and after an couple of hours of eating, visiting, and safety briefings, we made our way over to the runway where we boarded a small aircraft that would whisk us away to Punta Arenas. It was difficult to say goodbye to the south's winter wonderland. We may not be in the Antarctic anymore, but we are still planning on keeping this blog alive so be sure to check in with us! We hope you have a wonderful holiday season with friends and family!
